Interested in Fostering? Let's Talk!

About Fostering

The magic of rescue is transforming homeless, hopeless, unwanted dogs into happy, beloved family members. When you foster, you help make that magic happen.

For foster-based rescues like Midwest Rescue, the only way we can save a dog is when we have a foster home lined up. That's why it truly is one of the greatest gifts you can give a rescue dog.  (It's also very gratifying.)

When you foster for Midwest Rescue, we provide the food, supplies and vet care...basically, everything. You provide the structure and TLC.

We make every effort to ensure a foster dog is a good fit for its foster family's home. You'll get lots of support from us and get to be part of your foster dog's adoption.

Part of fostering includes:

  • Taking the dog to the vet when needed (visits are arranged around your schedule)
  • Attending occasional adoption events
  • Providing regular status updates
  • Taking photos and videos to help them get adopted
  • Working with our trainer if needed
  • Following our safety practices

Basic Foster Guidelines

  • Fosters must be at least 23 years old.
  • Fosters must live in the  Chicago area. It’s important to us to be close to our pups.
  • We don't place pups in foster homes with other dogs of the same gender—i.e., we won’t place a female dog in a home with another female. There is safety precedent for this.
  • We don't place foster dogs in  towns with pit bull restrictions or in rental/association properties where they aren't allowed.
  • We require fosters to follow certain safety practices, which our board members will discuss with you upfront.

A Few More Things...

Our Foster Screening Process

Afraid You'll Be a Foster Fail?

Afraid You'll Be a Foster Fail?

The better we know our foster families, the better we can ensure a good foster match. That's why our process involves:

  • Completion of  our application
  • Phone interviews with board members
  • An initial meet 'n greet/home inspection

Afraid You'll Be a Foster Fail?

Many people say they "can't" foster, because they won't be able to give up the pup when the time comes.

It's true that this happens sometimes, but with so many great dogs dying because there's no homes for them...

please don't let this stop you! Fostering saves lives.
