How Our Adoptions Work

Our Adoption Process

If you really want to get to know a pup before you make a lifelong commitment, you’ll love our process. But if you’re in a rush to bring a new dog home, we’re not the rescue for you.

Our goal is placing our rescue dogs in their forever homes. Most of them have already lost at least one family—that’s why they’re in the rescue system. We don’t want them to experience that trauma ever again.

So, we’ll take the time to really get to know you, your family and lifestyle—and give you the opportunity to get to know your chosen pup. By the time they move in, they'll already feel right at home!

That’s why our adoption process includes:

  • Completion of  our adoption application
  • At least 2  phone interviews with board members and/or fosters
  • An initial meet and greet
  • A home inspection
  • A playdate or two, especially if you have other pets or small kids (we need to ensure      that everyone is compatible)
  • Opportunities for you to get to know our pup, and us to get to know you!

We get it: our process isn't for everyone. But the vast majority of adopters say they’ll never adopt any other way…and become part of Midwest Rescue’s extended family.

Adoption Guidelines

  • Applicants must be at least 23 years of age.
  • We limit adoptions to the Chicago area. It’s important to us to be close to our pups.
  • We don't place pups in homes with other dogs of the same gender—i.e., we won’t place a female dog in a home with another female. There is safety precedent for this.
  • We do not place any dog in states, cities, or towns with pit bull bans or restrictions.
  • If an applicant lives in a rental or association housing, they must provide proof that pit bulls are allowed.
  • Owners must be willing to get formal training for their pup, if that’s part of our agreement.
  • We require owners to follow certain safety practices and vetting, which our board members will discuss with applicants.

A Few More Things...

Puppy Guidelines

Puppies under 6 months old must go to homes where a family member is home most of the day.

If puppies are too young to be spayed/neutered upon adoption, their adopters must agree to get them spayed/neutered at a pre-set age, at our expense. This is written into our contract.

Adoption Fees

Fees

Puppies (6 months and under) - $300

Adult Dogs - $250

All  of our rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. Adoption fees cover part of these costs, and also demonstrate that owners are willing and able to cover their pup’s expenses.
